The force of the dominant English language and culture of the United States has absorbed wave after wave of ethnic groups submerging and obliterating their languages and cultures in the process. This has been a remarkable and, some will say, positive achievement. Within a single generation a young Pole, Jew, Italian, or German typically could not count to ten in his/ her parent's language. This force; free and compulsory school, attractive and omnipresent media, English only workplace and friends has absorbed all “heritage” languages with breathtaking speed.
Destroy the language and the culture dies.
This force is a living day-to-day reality for the 40 million Spanish speakers in the United States.
English and its school system was and remains the road to fitting in and climbing the ladder of financial success and class status. Without English the individual is economically and socially marginalized. This is a fact that every Spanish speaking family and individual must come to terms with. English is not a choice. It is a survival necessity. Spanish is the choice.
It is very important for you to be clearly aware of this force in your family and its consequences.
Ask yourself honestly:
Is Spanish important to me and to my family? Do I wish to make it an important and permanent part of my children's lives ?
If your answer is “yes” be aware of your every day speech habits and and what you must do; form habits and attitudes that support learning of, and love for, Spanish in your home and family.
Habits are the key; it's not what you do today but what you do every day into the future that counts. Here are some things to do that will work for you if you turn them into habits.
1)Don't use English in the home. Again; don't use English in the home ! Don't speak or understand it ! Your child will learn English better and faster if not exposed to your English mistakes. Be positive. Do not tell the child not to speak English at home. Show— don't tell.
• Keep English media (TV, radio, records) to a minimum; focus on and enjoy Spanish language media. Recorded books in Spanish language bring models of perfect spoken Spanish into your home and can be repeated for lasting learning.
3) Keep Spanish language books and magazines available and visible (not in closets) in your house. Make sure that some are at the right reading level for the age of the child. Don't be afraid to spend some money on books. Share your books with other Spanish speaking families.
4) Use your local library. It probably has Spanish language books. If it dosen't have a good selection ask it to buy some. Don't take “no” for an answer.
5) Read the local Spanish language newspapers. See what parts (cartoons, sports, etc.) might be of interest to the child and discuss.
6) Read out loud to your children often. Get Spanish speaking neighbours involved and exchange reading to small groups. You are the Spanish tutor and teacher. You are not the English teacher. Never say in English, “How do you say——in Spanish ? ”
7) If it is practical and affordable send children to spend summers in your native country.
8) If you have a computer you have enormous Spanish resources and if you have Internet you can read dozens of Spanish language newspapers from all Spanish speaking countries.
9) If you have broadband you can now talk free and unlimited with anyone in your native country or anywhere who has a fast Internet connection.
10) If you are so fortunate as to have a non-English speaking grandparent or other person in your home make sure that he/ she spends as much time as possible with the child.
These are just a few ideas for forming habits that will keep Spanish alive in your home.
Don't drift. You have a decision to make: Spanish “yes” or Spanish “no”. Make sure you understand that you need to make a conscious decision and form the habits that will make it survive or die.

¿Vale la pena rescatar el español en tu familia?
El dominante idioma Ingles así como la cultura de los Estados Unidos, han absorbido poco a poco diversos grupos étnicos. Se han sumergido y erradicado sus idiomas y costumbres, lo que representa un logro notable y positivo. Comúnmente, dentro de una misma generación, un joven Polaco, Judío, Italiano o Alemán, no podía contar hasta diez en su idioma materno. El idioma ingles y su sistema educativo, son y siguen siendo el camino a la aceptación social y el ascenso directo al éxito financiero así como al estatus social.
Al no hablar Ingles, el individuo se encuentra social y económicamente marginado. Esta, es una realidad que cada familia hispano parlante así como los individuos, deben de aceptar. Aprender ingles no es una opción, es una necesidad de supervivencia. El español es la opción.
La misma fuerza: educación gratuita y obligatoria, la atractiva y masiva presencia de los medios, mas un ambiente laboral puramente angloparlante y amigos han absorbido todos los idiomas “de herencia” a un paso vertiginoso. Destruyendo el idioma, la cultura muere. Esta fuerza es la realidad día a día para 40 millones de personas hispano parlantes y sus familias en los Estados Unidos.
Es muy importante estar al tanto de dichas fuerzas dentro de su familia y las consecuencias de la misma.
Pregúntese una algo muy simple: ¿El Español es importante para mi y deseo convertirlo en una parte importante y permanente en la vida de mis hijos?
Si la respuesta es “Si” sea consciente de lo que hace y de lo que debería hacer: forme hábitos y actitudes que apoyen el aprendizaje y amor por el español en su hogar y dentro de su familia.
Los hábitos son la clave; no se trata de lo que haga hoy, si no de lo que haga todos los días lo que realmente cuenta. He aquí algunas recomendaciones de utilidad si se convierten en hábitos.
1. No use el Ingles en su casa. Repito: ¡No use Ingles en su casa! ¡No lo hable o conteste! Sus hijos aprenderán Ingles de una mejor manera, si no están expuestos a sus errores. Sea positivo. No les diga a sus hijos que no hablen Ingles en la casa, muéstreselo por medio de acciones.
2. Trate de consumir medios (TV, radio, discos) en Ingles lo menos posible; fomente y disfrute el consumo de medios de comunicación en Español. Los libros grabados en Español contienen modelos de un español perfectamente bien hablado, que se pueden utilizar en casa y pueden ser repetidos para un aprendizaje duradero.
3. Mantenga libros y revistas en español visibles (no en el closet) en su casa. Asegúrese de que éstos estén al nivel de lectura de sus niños. No tenga miedo de gastar su dinero en libros. Después, comparta sus libros con otras familias hispano parlantes. Asegúrese de tener un buen diccionario en Español disponible.
4. Visite tu Biblioteca Local. Probablemente ahí tienen libros en Español. Si no tienen una buena selección, recomiéndeles que compren. No tome un “No” como respuesta.
5. Lea el periódico en Español. Fíjese que secciones pueden ser de interés para sus hijos (deportes, caricaturas, etc.) y discútalas con ellos.
6. Lea a sus hijos todos los días. Consiga vecinos que hablen Español y forme grupos de lectura. Usted es el tutor y maestro de Español, usted no es el maestro de Ingles. Nunca diga “¿Como se dice ------ en español?”
7. Si es económicamente posible, mande a los pequeños a campamentos de verano en su país natal.
8. Si usted cuenta con una computadora, usted tiene una cantidad inmensa de recursos en Español y si cuenta con Internet usted puede leer una gran cantidad de periódicos en español, de todos los países de habla Hispana.
9. Ahora que si cuenta con banda ancha, usted puede hablar de manera gratuita y por el tiempo que quiera en su país o el mundo, con alguien que cuente con una conexión a Internet.
10. Por ultimo, si usted es afortunado y cuenta con los abuelos de sus hijos, haga lo posible por que el o ella pasen el mayor tiempo posible con su hijo.
Llevando a la práctica estas acciones, es mas factible conservar nuestras culturas de la manera en que nosotros las conocimos, permitiendo que el Ingles sea parte de la vida de nuestros hijos y preservando el Español en la familia.
